“In a circle of connection with other beings who aspire to be caretakers of our planet and all beings, we become intimate with our bodies, and explore ways of nurturing self & all beings…”
Join yoga & mindfulness teachers, Esther & Vivi, seasoned reporter & sustainability coach, Jo Confino, dedicated Latin American activist, Andres Conteris, and artist Paz Perlman, In this heart-opening deeply restorative retreat, where we integrate the practices of “Yoga—Mindfulness—Community Circle Gatherings” as a way of nurturing ourselves and reviving our relationship with the earth and our global community. Inspirational activists and global caretakers will share with us meaningful stories and new ways of re-envisioning the world. Cultivating this joyful and compassionate way of inter- being, we will explore together fresh approaches to positive global change and effective activism.
There are two parts to this “Re-Envision” caretaking retreat:
To become effective in taking care of mother Earth and tending to urgent world issues, we first need to tend to our basic needs for rest, good nutrition, and well-being, nurture our inner peace, and water the seeds of joy in us.
Also, by coming close and becoming intimate with fellow visionaries, in the spirit of inter-connectedness, we are infused with fresh energy and inspiration and thus discover new ways of “Right Action” in the world.
Join us in this 2-Step Caretaking Retreat
Step 1—Cultivating Joy & Taking Care of Ourselves
Many activists who are trying to do good things for the world, suffer from energy depletion and burn out. While doing the hard work of giving our very best to our life and to this planet, it helps to remember to nurture ourselves and to keep watering the seeds of joy in us. This way the hard work of saving the planet, with all its enormity, actually becomes a joyful activity.
In this caretaking retreat, in the magical nature of Mani, activists and all those who would like to consider positive action in the world, are invited to join us in the daily healing practices of caretaking for ourselves while in community.
Daily Practices - Caretaking
Step 2—Cultivating the Tools for Effective Activism
From this place of centeredness, we will cultivate the tools necessary to practice compassionate listening, sharing-circle on sustainability, surviving burn-out, and the secrets of staying present, strong, and effective on the path of action.

Things happen in a magical way and seeds are being watered just by following our natural inner compass with steps that lead us to joy. Back in May of 2022 in Plum Village, France, my steps led me to a group of meditators gathered outside the hut of our beloved late teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, listening to his assistant of 16 years Brother Phap Huu, talk about the peace and joy that Thay embodied through every breath, every step of his life. For an incessant worker like me, it was deeply impressive to consider Thay’s immense body of work, his influence in the world, and the way all this could be accomplished by a monk slowing down, minding his breath, drinking tea mindfully, eating with reverence, and connecting with other beings in the present moment. Right there and then, an inner shift took place with the realization that, slowing down, engaging in mindful activity could actually be the most efficacious way to saving the planet. This was also the time we connected with my friend Esther, a fellow yoga teacher and visionary who was in the same circle of sharing outside Thay’ s hut. We cannot even pin point the moment when we came up with the idea for this THRIVE event. Seeds are being watered slowly, imperceptibly, just by us following the path that brings us closer to joy and trusting out path every step of the way.
I like to think of us, humans, as seeds. Like any seed, we have the potential to grow. But ask any skilled gardener and they will tell you, not all soils are equal. There is healthy soil and unhealthy soil. What we consume through our senses - what we see, eat, think, listen to, the relations we carry and so forth - all are different components that make up the soil in which we plant ourselves every day.
Even with the best of intentions, we may be exposed to harmful pollutants - either from a past where we had little to no control over our environment or as adults in toxic societies that demand our constant attention and time with little inner reward. But even the most contaminated soils can transform into nutrient rich homes. And this capacity is innate in us.
We all need time to tend our soil. Sometimes, tending our soil can be agonizing, which is why gardening together, in the melody of our voices and the unison of our bodies, is a sure way to THRIVE even in the harshest of conditions. Join us as we, together, tend our soils and support one another in nutrient rich practices of mindful eating, compassionate listening, meditation, yoga, and other caretaking methodologies.

Help us raise funds in order to give the opportunity to young people to join us in the Live or Online THRIVE Festival at Zen Rocks—Greece: May 19-June 18, 2023.
During this festival we want to explore together what it means for us to THRIVE as individuals, communities, and as a planet during these critical times. We shall support ACTIVISM for : Equality, sustainability, regenerative living, sustainability, personal & global transformation. Inspirational teachers & musicians will lead us through a journey of personal empowerment, connection with the divine and our community of interbeing.
Zen Rocks is a small independent retreat center with limited funding sources and real running costs (the major work is done by paid workers, not volunteers so far). We are not a non-profit organization receiving funding from sources, nor are we a large scale hotel with investment capital behind us. A small team of visionaries, we are here to provide a safe haven for people through creating opportunities for: healing, restoration, sincere meditation practice, and positive action for humanity, animals, our planet.
The Buddha taught the way of “seeking alms” is a practice of giving and receiving. We encourage individuals and foundations to fund the participation of young individuals at this THRIVE@Zen Rocks Caretaking Event for Activists, as a way of supporting your activist work and contribution to important world issues.
You can also attend only the kirtan concert night by getting a ticket here:
Esther's yoga exploration began in the heart of NYC at the former Jivamukti Yoga School auspiciously landing her in the jewel of the Middle East at her teacher's home city of Beirut. What was to be a 3-month teaching residency in 2019 continues to be a journey in the growth of the yoga community in Lebanon and of herself. After a deadly blast in 2020 that nearly destroyed the studio and much of the nation's capital, and amidst the height of COVID, Esther remained steadily in place raising funds and helping rebuild the shala and the students she serves.
The ground on which she stands is where Esther meets all practitioners on their own trek through life's peaks and valleys. Her personal practice of meditation, asana, and karma yoga inform her classes and retreats, offering students a rooted and uplifting quality for personal and collective transformation. Along with an Advanced Certification in Jivamukti Yoga, Esther is certified in Trauma Informed Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, and Yoga + Mindfulness for youth.
Esther's 14 years as a volunteer camp counselor for children/teens living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS and her time as a hospice volunteer have deeply shaped her understanding of interconnectedness. While teaching internationally, Esther maintains a steady karma yoga practice offering free weekly yoga sessions to young girls living in an orphanage in Beirut. Esther is immensely grateful for the teachings of yoga and meditation, and the continued guidance of her teachers Rima Rabbath, Deepak Chopra, and most beloved Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
A visionary and activist for positive change, Vivi returned to her homeland, Greece, from San Francisco, with her beloved husband, Eraj, in 2004 with a strong impetus to create and participate in enlightening communities. In her life and work she has been trying to integrate Yoga, Zen, and Tantric Philosophy, the spiritual paths she has sought to combine for over 20 years, while a filmmaker in California. These practices have helped her to survive the arduous rollercoaster of working in the film & advertising world for two decades.
In the last 20 years, through her journey of teaching and practicing Yoga and Meditation, Vivi has been able to find a way of practice that makes us strong in all levels and helps us to triumph even in challenging circumstances. Amidst the Greek economic crises, Vivi in loving partnership with Eraj, have managed to create successfully: NYSY Academy for Yoga and Pilates, and Avocado Vegetarian Café—two bright centers in the heart of Athens. They are still creating another life-long dream, building Zen Rocks, a stunningly beautiful retreat center in Mani/Southern Greece, dedicated to maximizing our human potential through the healing practices of Zen, Yoga, Tantric meditation, Pilates, Fitness, Art, nutrition, permaculture, and restorative living.
Vivi’s greatest joy is to welcome beings into an ever widening circle of friendship. Echoing the words of her beloved Zen teacher, Reb Anderson: “Enlightenment is the way we support one another.”

Paz Perlman is a visual artist who exhibits internationally and has taken a particular interest in how art can support our collective awakening on issues such as climate change and social inequality. Perlman grapples with feelings, urges, and memories within the unconscious, allowing them to surface through her art. Questions arise around identity and her relationship to impermanence, healing and transformation; issues that lie at the heart of her long-term study and practice of Zen Buddhism. After her graduation with a BA in Fine Arts from Central St Martins, University of Arts, London, she lived and worked from her New York studio, exhibiting in a number of galleries in the city.
Nearly three years ago she moved to live next door to the Plum Village monastery of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
Perlman last year created an art installation for a retreat of climate leaders’ at Plum Village and was recently commissioned to make large scale interactive art installations for a major symposium on the global commons at the Garrison Institute in New York.
Paz Perlman’s childhood was shaped by war, loss and migration. This has created an urge, through her works, to heal the space where time and events leave their traces and scars; a fragile and unfolding process of discovery.
Perlman began her career as a dancer and changed direction to become a sculptor. A decade ago, her personal healing journey inspired another radical change in her subject matter and process, resulting in works that express fragility and impermanence, represented in installations, collages, painting and prints using a broad range of mixed media and found objects.
Andrés Thomas Conteris` family background is from North and South America. His uncle, Hiber Conteris, was a political prisoner for eight years under the military dictatorship in Uruguay beginning in 1976. Andrés organized a worldwide campaign on behalf of him and worked closely with organizations such as Amnesty International, Americas Watch, and the Committee to Protect Journalists. He graduated with honors with a B.A. in Peace and Global Studies from Earlham College in 1984 focusing on Gandhian nonviolence, human rights advocacy, and intentional faith-based communities of justice and peace. He was awarded the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to pursue the topic “Theology of Resistance”. He has an M.A. in religious studies from the Howard University. In 1985, Marcos Conteris, first cousin of Andrés, was gunned down by U.S.-backed contra rebels in Nicaragua. This led Andrés to dedicate much of his life to bring change to U.S. foreign policy in Central America. He participated in a nonviolent direct action in front of the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa in 1987 and the following year he initiated and organized an international nonviolent protest at U.S. embassies in Guatemala City and Tegucigalpa as well as the headquarters of the Pentagon´s Joint Task Force Bravo at the Palmerola Airbase in Honduras.Andrés lived and worked in Honduras from 1994-99 and worked as a Human Rights Advocate. He served as an active member of the Commission of Guarantors, assigned to monitor compliance of an accord signed between the Honduran President and leaders of indigenous peoples. For his efforts, Earlham College, honored him in 1997 with the Sesquicentennial Alumni Peacemaker Award. He is a Co-Producer of “Hidden in Plain Sight” (2003), an award-winning feature-length documentary film narrated by Martin Sheen that looks at U.S. Policy toward Latin America through the prism of the School of the Americas, the controversial military school that trains Latin American soldiers in the United States.Andrés has led a number of educational and action delegations throughout the Americas. He has been active with worldwide movements including the World Student Christian Federation, the International Network for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, and the World Social Forum.Since initiating Democracy Now! en Español in 2005, Andrés has worked to build a network of over 500 radio stations throughout the Americas and Spain which air the headline news in Spanish of Democracy Now!´s War and Peace Report, a daily, grassroots, global, unembedded, international, independent news program. When the military coup expelled the president of Honduras on June 28, 2009, Andrés travelled there the following day to lead the first post-coup international fact-finding delegation. On September 21, 2009, he entered the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa to cover the return of President Manuel Zelaya to the country. For the next four months, Andrés filed stories from inside the embassy for dozens of independent media around the world and worked as a stringer photographer for Agence France Presse. By the time President Zelaya left the embassy on January 27, 2010, Andrés was the only member of the media left in Brazil´s diplomatic headquarters in Honduras. On that day, he was interviewed on Democracy Now! by Amy Goodman.Since 2006, Andrés has been part of the Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness program of the California Institute of Integral Studies. His passion for cosmology is something an elder traditional woman from the Oneida nation recognized when he was a child and granted him the name, “Shooting Star.” He is now working on a writing project which weaves the wisdom of the cosmos with the need for revolutionary change on planet earth.

The retreat is located about 30 minutes South of the city of Kalamata, in a quiet olive grove amidst the sea and blue skies. The closest village to us is Kallianeika.
1. Drive on the new freeway from Athens to Kalamata, and be prepared to stop frequently for tolls. Expect to pay around 15€ each way. It may take you 2-2.5 hours to reach Kalamata.
2. Stay on the freeway and exit Kalamata heading towards Areopolis and Kitries. After the freeway ends, you will pass Lidl, and a café called Cosi on the right, and then the road forks and you see a road sign. At this point you have the option of heading up towards the mountain towards Areopolis and Kardamyli, or taking a right towards the sea and Kitries. You can reach us either way. We are giving you directions through the coastal road here, as it may be easier to find our location this way.
3. Take a right towards Kitries and drive down the coast for about 10-15 minutes. Right as you approach Kitries, the road goes uphill. There is a big retaining wall right in front of you, causing you to almost stop. You see a road sign for Doloi.
4. Make a sharp left up the mountain towards Doloi.
5. Drive for 5 minutes until you reach the village of Kalianeika.
6. When you reach Kalianeika, stop in front of the church and set your odometer to 0.
7. Drive for one kilometer, and you will come to switch back turn where you will see a fence with big cacti and a huge rock. You are getting close.
8. Immediately afterwards, you see a second switch back turn and a couple small signs for Zen Rocks. At this point leave the asphalt road and enter a smaller cement farm road. Drive 200 meters on cement, and then another 400 meters of dirt road. At this point you will see the electrical posts and a cement road up on your left. This is our private drive way to Zen Rocks.
(Attention: our drive way is the SECOND paved road you see on your left. Do not take the first one, right where the cement ends… wait till you drive the extra 400 meters of dirt and pebble road and you come across the electrical wires and big posts… at this point you will also notice that the farm road you are on is covered with the cement of our paved drive way.)
9. Go left on our cement road. It is a sharp incline. Come up on first gear and full throttle. Small cars will do fine if you know how to drive fearlessly.
10. Welcome to Zen Rocks.
As Zen master Thich Nhat Hahn says: YOU HAVE ARRIVED!
Όπως λέει και ο δάσκαλος του Ζεν Thich Nhat Hahn: You have arrived! Pause. Enjoy!
